France <> Italy landslide summer 2019
On 2 July 2019, a landslide near Modane, France obstructed train tracks and is disrupting travel between France and Italy. Both the high-speed TGV and the overnight Thello/EuroNight trains are affected between the two countries. Please see below for specific details about bus replacements, refunds and rerouting.
SNCF has cancelled all TGV trains between France and Italy until 31 July. These trains are fully refundable via your Rail Europe account. It is not possible to process an exchange for a new journey via your Rail Europe account.
SNCF are offering bus replacement services between Paris and Turin and Milan, and vice versa. They haven't offered much information about these services except to say that space is limited, and you should arrive at the station an hour before your original train was scheduled to depart.
They have also suggested rerouting your journey via Switzerland. That requires you to rebook new tickets and refund your original ones. Though not officially confirmed, you may be able to claim any additional costs for new tickets here.
Currently there is no plan beyond 31 July. We recommend checking SNCF's traffic update page for updates. We will add to this article as we have more news.
On weeknights through 26 July, Thello is operating a bus replacement service between Paris and Milan. The train will run as scheduled between Venice and Milan, so if you're traveling from Paris to Venice you'll travel by bus to Milan, then board the train to Venice at Milan. If you're traveling from Venice to Paris, you'll take your regularly scheduled train to Milan, then transfer to a bus which will go to Paris.
On Saturday and Sunday nights through 4 August, the overnight train will use an alternative route. The timetable will remain the same.
If you wish to postpone your travel, you'll need to submit a request directly to Thello for an exchange using their online contact form. Please select "information request" as the subject heading. You must submit your request before the departure of your original train.
If you decide not to travel, you'll need to request a refund directly with Thello via their complaint form. Please note that refunds may take a month or two to be processed, but there's no reason you won't be reimbursed.
Thello's complaint form is also the place to request a refund for a difference in price/service; for example if you booked a First Class ticket on the train.
Tickets for onward travel
If you have tickets for connecting or onward services, such as the Eurostar or a domestic Italian train, these can only be changed or refunded as per their fare conditions. If you decide not to travel and you've booked non-flexible tickets, you will need to submit a claim to your travel insurance company.
