Submitting a claim to Renfe

If your train is delayed or cancelled, or if you need to request a refund due to bereavement or hospitalisation of a passenger on your travel date, we can submit a claim on your behalf.

This article includes claims for Renfe-SNCF trains between Paris and Barcelona.

Please click "More Help" on the bottom right of your screen to send us the details of your request. We'll need:

  • Your Rail Europe reference number (it begins with "RE-")
  • Passenger name(s)
  • Travel date
  • Train number
  • Specific details about your departure and arrival stations, date and time of disruption and any costs you incurred
  • Hospitalisation note or copy of death certificate, depending on the reason for your claim.
Keep hold of any proof of your delay and/or receipts for expenses that you've incurred.

When will the refund be paid?

In many cases we can refund you immediately, particularly if your train was cancelled. For illness, bereavement, and international delays, it can take anywhere from a few weeks to a couple of months for Renfe to process claims. It can take longer if there is a high volume of claims, for instance during a national rail strike.

Once we have approval from Renfe, we'll refund your payment card via your Rail Europe account and send you an email confirming it.
